Meaning & Analysis
Effortlessly executed in blue ink, Sitting With You is a nude self-portrait created by Tracey Emin in the summer of 2013 from her studio in the South of France. The self-portrait is fluid and spontaneous, and Emin captures herself seated with her figure stretched across the entire expanse of the composition. The viewer’s eye is led down to the bottom right of the piece, and at the point where her calf is cut off is Emin’s signature and the edition number of the print.
Sitting With You is testament to Emin’s ability to capture her own likeness through minimal mark-making with a distinct lightness. According to Emin herself, she has been producing self-portraits ever since she was a young child, so it comes as no surprise that she has truly mastered her self-portrait. Like so many of her other Nude Self-Portraits, Emin pays little attention to her face in this etching, celebrating instead the curvature of her feminine form.
