Meaning & Analysis
Like his contemporaries, Roy Lichtenstein made a decisive break with the artistic traditions of the past. He rejected any distinction between high art and popular culture, taking inspiration from the industrially produced visual imagery of 1960s advertising. Lichtenstein devised ways to replicate the appearance of commercial printing and explored a breadth of subject matter appropriated from various modern art movements.
Water Lilies - Blue Lily Pads is one of six screenprints on stainless steel created in 1992. Belonging to the celebrated Water Lilies, the print reinterprets impressionist Claude Monet’s “Nymphéas” using Lichtenstein’s unique syntax of stylistic motifs. The reflective surface of Water Lilies - Blue Lily Pad incorporates a swirled stainless-steel picture plane, saturated vivid colours, and dense swathes of Ben Day dots. The piece is a celebration of the artist’s advanced and experimental approach to printing processes.
Lichtenstein designed the frame for each of his Water Lilies. Water Lilies - Blue Lily Pads is distinctive because it is one of only two of the six screen prints with an actual wooden frame. This is a clever conceptual and sculptural trick that emphasises the artwork as an object. Water Lilies - Blue Lily Pad is a compelling embodiment of the artist’s key artistic concerns.
