This etching was created by Lucian Freud in 1985, and forms part of our Naked Portraits collection of his work. As the title of the work would suggest, the composition focuses on a nude woman holding her foot. The sitter's curvaceous body appears off-centre at the top of the composition, giving the impression of her body being suspended in negative space.
Like many of Freud's etchings, Girl Holding Her Foot was produced alongside a painting of the same subject and title. In the painted rendition, the nude woman is sat on the sofa in Freud's Notting Hill studio. Within this etching however, Freud focuses solely on her naked portrait. Despite depicting her body against a bare background, Freud's masterful handling of tone gives the body a sense of mass and pronounces the curves of her feminine form.
Though the identity of this unnamed sitter is unknown, we can observe in Girl Holding Her Foot an intimate bond between sitter and artist so typical of Freud's work. Renowned for his risqué love-life, the sitter might have been one of Freud's many lovers who sat for him in the studio.
