Meaning & Analysis
Depicted in thick, bold lines and simplified shapes, The Three Cats Alstow is a lithograph from 1966 by L. S. Lowry. This print shows a street scene of a town from an elevated view, with many people filling the foreground, and a building in the middle of the composition that splits the road. The three cats indicated by the title, are shown on the right hand side of the image, sitting facing away from the viewer in front of a group of children.
This print is an example of the way in which Lowry injected humour into many of his street scenes by depicting a vast range of people that are spread across the entire composition. We can see a man who has fallen over onto the road, a parent chasing their young child, some others chasing a dog and even some figures who lie on the ground against the terraced houses.
Lowry was interested in depicting working class life in the industrial towns in the North East of England and The Three Cats Alstow is a lively example of this. Creating over 8,000 drawings like this one, Lowry was keen to record the everyday nuances that he saw around him. Working as a rent collector during the day, and an artist at night, Lowry had a unique perspective into the lives of working class people in the North East of England.
