Meaning & Analysis

Blame Game X is part of the Blame Game collection, which is composed of 10 screen prints, each of which depicts the same cartoon character. Every print in the collection favours the close-up, only ever showing a small portion of the character’s face. The use of bold, black gestural lines and a flat, graphic style is characteristic of KAWS’ unique visual language, and the crossed out eyes seen in this print are a repeated visual motif that KAWS incorporates into most of his artworks.

KAWS’ graphic style is often compared to artists like Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, two leading 20th century artists who emerged from the New York City graffiti subculture of the 1980s. Haring’s impressive collection of repeated icons and motifs, such as the radiant baby, angel, flying devil and barking dog resonate strongly with KAWS’ own artistic practice and the repeated motifs that run throughout his works.
