Meaning & Analysis
Street 5 is a signed relief print made by pioneering British artist Julian Opie in 2020. Coming in an edition size of 55 the print shows four anonymous figures walking across the composition. Captured in motion, it is apparent that the figures do not know each other as they are walking in different directions and do not interact with each other. Although the backdrop of the print is a simple turquoise colour, the figures appear to be walking through an urban city as they are rendered in formal, business attire and are depicted holding objects like phones, briefcases, and handbags.
The figures in Street 5 are drawn using simple, thick lines filled with blocks of flat colour. Opie uses yellow, white, black and red lines, with each figure being delineated in a different colour. The figures do not have faces and their heads are replaced by simple circles. Street 5 is one of six prints in Opie's Street collection. Each print in the collection depicts four anonymous figures walking across the composition. The prints can also be seen alongside three sculptures made by Opie in 2019 which were shown at his first solo gallery exhibition in New York City at the Lisson Gallery. The sculptures show similar anonymous figures captured in motion.
By taking everyday subjects such as people walking in a city and rendering them in a simple style, Opie demonstrates that ordinary and commonplace things and people are also worthy of being made into fine artworks.This approach to art resonates strongly with the Pop Art movement and the prints made by Andy Warhol.
