Meaning & Analysis
Street 4 is a signed relief print made by the British artist Julian Opie in 2020. Coming in an edition size of 55 the print shows four people captured walking across the composition. The people Opie depicts in this print have all had their faces replaced by a circle that appears to hover above their shoulders. Void of any facial detail, Opie differentiates the figures by giving each person a different haircut, outfit and distinct gait.
The figures in this print are rendered using thick, coloured outlines filled with blocks of simple, flat colour. Green, blue, black and yellow are used which clash with the bright orange backdrop of the print. Street 4 captures the essence of Opie’s distinct visual language which is characterised by his use of thick outlines and blocks of colour which focus the viewer’s attention on the form of the people or objects he is depicting.
Street 4 is one of six prints in Opie’s Street collection. Each print in this collection shows a group of four people walking through a city. The prints can be seen alongside a group of three sculptures of the same name (produced in 2019) which similarly show anonymous walking figures.
