Meaning & Analysis
Street 3 is a signed relief print made by the acclaimed British artist Julian Opie in 2020. Coming in an edition size of 55 the print shows four figures captured in motion, walking across the composition. It is clear that the figures are strangers and do not know each other as they are walking in different directions and are not interacting with one another. One woman is depicted looking at her phone as she strides across the artwork to the right of the composition, while the man walking towards her seems to be carrying a heavy shopping bag.
The figures in Street 3 are all rendered using thick lines filled with blocks of colour. The brightly coloured figures pop out against the bold green backdrop. The variety of colours animate the print and compliment the sensation of motion Opie is trying to elicit from the moving figures.
Street 3 is one of six prints in Opie’s Street collection. The artworks all show a group of four strangers walking through the city. Although Opie does not add a city backdrop to these artworks, the viewer can infer the people are set in an urban environment from their clothes and the objects they are carrying- phones, briefcases, handbags and shopping bags.
