Meaning & Analysis
Dino Crawling is a signed digital print made by British artist Julian Opie in 2012. The acrylic print comes in an edition size of 50 and shows an anonymous, nude figure crawling across the composition. Opie creates the illusion of movement by duplicating the lower portion of the figure’s legs and arm and blurring them. The figure is rendered in black and white and set against a bright blue backdrop.
As is seen in Dino Crawling, the people Opie draws tend to be faceless. The artwork resonates with other prints by Opie depicting people in motion, such as Tina Walking (2010) and Academic (2014). In these prints, Opie brings individuality to the figures through their clothes and accessories. The nude figure in Dino Crawling, however, contrasts with these other images as it lacks any identifying features that might point towards the figure’s age, gender or profession.
Dino Crawling captures the essence of Opie’s simple and minimalist style. The artist often uses simplified forms which he renders using thick, black lines filled with blocks of colour.
