Meaning & Analysis

Four Majors (2018) is a signed screen print by Jonas Wood featuring four images of tennis courts that capture the artist’s interest in the sports world and flatness of modern abstraction. Reimagining a commonplace subject matter in bold colours and shapes, the print exemplifies how the fabric of everyday life inspires Wood’s creative practice. Blue, red, and green surfaces dominate the depicted venues, contrasting with black backgrounds that mediate a sense of stillness in the areas where stands with team supporters would be expected to appear.

Each of the images presents an ostensibly flat plane, confounding the viewer’s expectations of dimensions and scale. The clarity and orderliness of the image invoke representation of the interior space in such works as Interior with Blue Terrace And Garden (2017) by David Hockney, whom Wood mentions as one of his major influences.
