Meaning & Analysis
This ceramic mosaic from 2010 is a limited edition of 150 from Invader’s Invasion Kits collection. The rectangular mosaic is made of 165 small ceramic tiles. It depicts one of Invader’s Space Invader characters, through which the artist has reached world fame. The red Space Invader is here placed at the centre of the mosaic against a white background.
Invader released this Invasion Kit on the occasion of his solo exhibition in Japan entitled Home Sweet Home. Held at Gallery Target in Tokyo’s Harajuku neighbourhood, the exhibition presented a retrospective of Invader’s works and featured an entirely new installation on the walls of the Gallery with a brand new Space Invader reading ‘I am home, Japan’. The title of the exhibition played with the place of origin of Space Invaders, which the artist drew out of the Japanese video game. Returning to Japan after 9 years since its first Invasion, Invader’s exhibition paid tribute to the creators of the arcade game.
Additionally, Invader’ use of red and white mosaic tiles in this piece meant to reference the colours of the Japanese national flag, adding layers of references and quotations to the Invasion Kit. This small Invasion Kit is thus a fascinating tribute to Japan which attests to Invader’s love for and debt to Japanese culture.
