Meaning & Analysis
This signed etching from 1990 is a rare, limited edition of 55 from Howard Hodgkin’s Palms series. The horizontal print presents to the viewer a colourful, semi-representational depiction of a palm tree. The tree, which occupies the majority of the print surface, is traced through carefully-planned green dots, lies against a lime green background, and is framed by a red, painted rectangle, as typical of Hodgkin’s mature works.
Street Palm makes use of one of Hodgkin’s all-time favourite representational motifs, the palm tree, and is inspired by the artist’s memory of a window view outside of his hotel in Tangier, Morocco. That memory was so dear to the artist that he also made a painting, entitled In Tangiers, on which this print was based.
Through his art, Hodgkin wanted to remember and evoke intense emotional states and personal moments of recollection. Street Palm, therefore, perfectly emblematises Hodgkin’s approach to artmaking, offering its viewers a glimpse into the eventful life of the artist.
