Biography
Austrian artist Heimo Zobernig is renowned for his innovative approach to Conceptual Art, navigating across various mediums including painting, sculpture, video, performance and installation.
Born in 1958 in Mauthen, Austria, Zobernig's early education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna provided the foundation for his explorations into Minimalist and Postmodernist aesthetics. His work is characterised by an analytical approach that examines the constructs of art-making, presentation, and the roles of institutions in the art world, positioning him as a pivotal figure in Contemporary Art.
Zobernig's artistic journey began with an interest in the Minimalist and Conceptual movements, where he developed a keen focus on the intersections of Modernism and the Avant-Garde. Over the years, Zobernig has continually challenged traditional art practises by repurposing exhibition spaces, transforming them into integral components of his site-specific artworks.
Books and posters play a crucial role in Zobernig’s body of work, reflecting his deep engagement with the linguistic dimensions of art since 1980. As an extension of his creative practice, Zobernig has produced over 100 artist’s books, catalogues, and monographs, alongside an equal number of posters, using publishing as a medium to further explore and express his artistic concepts.
Since 2000, Heimo Zobernig has held the position of Professor of Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he also practices art. In recognition of his significant and varied contributions to Contemporary Art, Zobernig was honoured with the Roswitha Haftmann Prize in 2016.
One of Zobernig's notable achievements was his representation of Austria at the 2015 Venice Biennale, where he transformed the Austrian Pavilion into a minimalist, monochromatic space, stripping it down to its architectural components. The installation provided a contemplative counterpoint to the often visually vibrant context of the Biennale. This installation offered a contemporary representation of national identity in art and emphasised Zobernig's commitment to simplicity and conceptual clarity.
Printmaking is an extension of Zobernig's broader artistic practise, where he often plays with geometric forms and the interplay of colour and space. His 2008 untitled screenprint exemplifies this approach, with intersecting black and white shapes subtly spelling out the word “LOVE”, demonstrating his ability to blend conceptual depth with visual simplicity. This print reflects Zobernig's broader practice of exploring the boundaries between language, form, and spacial perception.
