Fourth Detail, Snails Pace, March 27th 1995 is one of five prints, in which David Hockney creates a fictional universe inspired by the interior of his own studio. One the of distinctive features characterizing the space that inspired the series was the wide range and quantity of artworks it gathered. The print mirrors the world of colour and vibrancy represented by Hockney’s studio with its wealth of paintings occupying every possible corner. The artist joins two canvases perpendicularly to emulate a stage set and, in doing so, brings together a variety of densely accumulated colours and shapes. Hockney’s fictive world emanates with lightheartedness and buoyancy, capturing the gist of his creative energy, idiom, and imagery throughout the years. Resembling hills, fields, meadows, and houses, the various forms create a complex microcosm of the artist’s private world, wherein multiple elements simultaneously vie for the viewer’s attention.
The print represents how the scale and ambition of Hockney’s projects continues to grow throughout the years. Measuring 82cm x 105cm, the print recalls Hockney’s acrylic paintings of Mulholland Drive with their giant panoramic vista that make the viewer feel part of the landscape. Here as well, forms and shapes blown up to a preposterous size create an immersive, sensual experience as they invite the viewer to step into the artist’s personal world.
