An Imaginary Landscape, executed by David Hockney in 1969 and released in an edition of 75, depicts geometric forms, set on a flat brown surface. The subject matter, form and composition are radically different from what we typically expect from Hockney: much loved for his vibrant, energetic depictions of the natural world or honest, intimate portraits of himself and loved ones. The stern composition and hard-edged forms of An Imaginary Landscape contradict all that we assume a Hockney painting would look like. The shading and shadows cast by the forms suggest a light source situated on the left hand side of the composition.
