Meaning & Analysis
Damien Hirst’s H4-5 Nong Nooch debuted in 2018 at the Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills as part of his H4 Veils series. Drawing on a pointillist influence Hirst’s Giclée print uses yellow, red, blue, white, and green paint, rendered in varying sizes, to create the composition.
Produced with the intention of demonstrating Hirst’s skill as a painter, H4-5 Nong Nooch exhibits a layered texture inviting the viewer to consider his painterly process during the production of the design. Relating to the other works in the series, Hirst is preoccupied with the concept of curtains as barriers. In this work things are slowly revealed that might first have been missed in the textured composition. The work is indicative of his continued interest in the use of dots and his experimentation with the use of colour. The viewer is reminded of his Visual Candy paintings of 1993. However, there is a distinct character
imbued in the H4-5 Nong Nooch print. First, the use of blue as a background layer gives the print a darker tone than several of the others in the series. second the preponderance of small white spots in conjunction with
larger markings of paint gives the work a freer character. In this print in particular, Hirst’s interest in pointillism is evident. This work marries Hirst’s interest in colour, which features in several of his other series, with a desire to exhibit a painterly approach akin to his The Virtues series.
