Meaning & Analysis
Flumequine is an etching from 2007 by Damien Hirst, published in an edition of 74. The print shows a large grid of brightly coloured dots equally spaced across the composition and set against a white backdrop. As an editioned print version of one of Hirst’s famous Spots paintings, Flumequine is part of a group of highly sought after works in the artist’s oeuvre.
The Spots paintings are formulaic in their composition and production. They marked a turning point in Hirst’s career where his artistic output was large enough to warrant employing assistants to carry out the production of some of his works. Beginning by painting a small number of Spots paintings himself, Hirst swiftly created a system by which others could follow his instructions and produce paintings on his behalf. With a small number of basic rules, the Spots paintings have an infinite potential towards variation, with each spot a perfect circle and composed in a grid format.
It is only in the later stages of Hirst’s career that he has become interested in prints and editions. His first print portfolio was produced in 1999 and were a set of screen prints that depicted medicine bottle labels. Since his first print portfolio, Hirst has produced many prints and editions like those in the Spots series and are a major part of his oeuvre.
