Meaning & Analysis
Confitebor Tibi is a signed screen print in colours with diamond dust created by contemporary artist, Damien Hirst, in 2009. In this impressive print, Hirst produces concentric circles composed of butterflies. Emanating from a small, yellow butterfly in the centre of the composition, large circles of butterflies are arranged in intricate patterns, creating a captivating print. The colours Hirst uses are bright and bold, with vibrant blues and yellows dominating the composition, along with exciting splashes of red and orange.
The print is part of the artist’s Psalms series which is composed of 150 works. In this series, Hirst produces a variety of prints, all of which depict circular patterns made of butterflies. The series is part of a bigger project, the Kaleidoscope series, which similarly makes art out of butterflies.
Each print in the series is named after a psalm from the Old Testament, emblematic of the way in which Hirst uses his art to question belief systems, such as religion. Hirst, as an artist, is fascinated in exploring contemporary systems of belief through his art. As well as looking at religion, the artist has explored the role of art and medicine in modern life.
