H5-4 Claridges is a print from Damien Hirst’s 2018 Colour Space series. The print shows many colourful dots across the entire composition, placed seemingly at random creating a joyous and spontaneous image full of energy. Many of the dots in the composition overlap and splatters of paint can be seen across the print. Hirst’s Colour Space paintings, which this series is based on, were first exhibited at the Gagosian Gallery in New York in 2018.
Hirst’s Colour Space series evolved from his iconic Spot paintings. The Spot paintings are characterised by rationality and logic but at the same time explore intuitive and aesthetically pleasing colour choice. Discussing the spot paintings more broadly, Hirst has explained, “I believe all painting and art should be uplifting for the viewer. I love colour. I feel it inside me. It gives me a buzz.”
Set against a plain white backdrop and depicted in bright colours, this print is deceptively simple and joyous. The concern with colours and depiction of dots makes H5-4 Claridges distinct and instantly recognisable as a work by Hirst. H5-4 Claridges abandons the original grid formula that governed the original Spot paintings, creating a work that is much freer and plays with expression and spontaneity.
