Meaning & Analysis
H5-3 Camino Real is a print from 2018 that forms part of Damien Hirst’s Colour Space series. The print shows many colourful dots across the entire composition, placed seemingly at random creating a joyous and spontaneous image full of energy. Many of the dots in the composition overlap and splatters of paint can be seen across the print.
The Colour Space series evolves from Hirst’s iconic paintings which are some of the artist’s most widely recognised works. Similarities between H5-3 Camino Real and the paintings can be drawn from the depiction of spots of the same size, each a unique, bright colour. The key difference from the Spot paintings and this series is that the Colour Space prints and paintings do not adhere to the strict grid formula of Hirst’s earlier works. This series therefore marks a turning point for Hirst from the logic of mechanical paint application to more organic and expressive compositions.
It is only in the later stages of Hirst’s career that he has become interested in prints and editions. His first print portfolio was produced in 1999 and was a set of screen prints that depicted medicine bottle labels. Since his first print portfolio, Hirst has produced many print series like the Colour Space portfolio.
