Nineteen Greys B, executed in 1968 and released in an edition of 75, depicts ovals of equal size, placed at equal intervals across the page, slanting at varying degrees. The hue of each circle darkens in tone as they reach the centre, creating a diagonal line of darker ovals across the page. This series represents Bridget Riley’s initial forays into using tones other than black and white, which characterise her earlier works.
This series of screen prints plays on three fundamental elements: the gird; the angles; and tonal movement. Each of these organisational elements varies slightly in each print as Riley carries out in-depth explorations into the effects of varying hues and compositions. The central subject of this series, therefore, is the result of these variations and their effects on the viewer.
In the late 1960s, Riley expanded her palette to incorporate a whole spectrum of colour. Hence, this series sits on the cusp of an important turning point for the artist and her career.
