Meaning & Analysis
Wall Painting 1, later named Arcadia 1, was first painted directly onto the walls of Galerie Max Hetzler in Berlin. In this painting, the lozenges push outside the concentric rectangular frame of the print, emphasising the sense of movement and dynamism contained within as they jostle and strain to escape. The figure and ground distinction appears more fractured here amidst segments of white. Moreover, painting directly onto the wall in the original, Riley dissolves the distinction of figure, ground and support, thus activating the picture plane in an innovative way, entirely different to her works on canvas.
Riley’s series of wall painting was initiated in 2007 with Wall Painting 1, thus the print holds a significant place in the artist’s oeuvre. This work is animated by the sum effect of the interaction between form and colour.
