Meaning & Analysis

Like the other works in this series, Untitled (Evoe) is structured on a diagonal grid. This underlying structure gives the composition a forward movement that is tempered by the soft lines of the curved forms. The basic building blocks for these curvilinear works are serpentine segments in solid blocks of colour, which are of varying size. The complex structure of the print makes it seem as if each colour in turn alternately becomes the figure and ground.

The suggested title of the artwork, Evoe, was a cry associated with the intoxicated rites of the Greek god of wine and fertility, Bacchus.
