Places For Change is a signed screen print produced by Op artist Bridget Riley in 2009. The print depicts an abstract composition of interlocking planes of colour. The work is dominated by green, blue and white and the arrangement of curved shapes produces a sweeping motion that is reminiscent of the undulations of nature.

The print belongs to the Lozenges collection which Riley worked on between 1998 and 2009. The works in this collection are characterised by blocks of colour and curved shapes which interact with one another in elegant compositions. The use of colour in this collection marks a development in the artist’s style. Riley rose to fame with her black and white paintings in the 1960s, however the artist soon became fascinated with colour and its impact on perception and emotions.

Riley is very interested in nature and the way in which she could mimic its movements in her artworks. Riley was inspired by rippling water, rolling waves and the blowing wind which reflects how the artist’s work is grounded in natural experience. This interest can be traced back to the time Riley spent in Cornwall. Riley moved to Cornwall when she was a teenager to escape London during World War II. The artist explains how the ever-changing Cornish seas and skies stimulated her vision and that she wanted to recreate these sensations in her artworks.
