Made To Measure is a signed screen print produced by Op artist Bridget Riley. In this print, Riley arranges a collection of spots, all identical in size, in a grid formation. The spots are rendered in green, purple and brown against a plain white backdrop. Evenly spaced out, they evoke a sense of mechanical precision that is reminiscent of Damien Hirst’s Spot paintings. Made in 2020, this print is one of the artist’s later works.
The influence of the French post-Impressionist artist, George Seurat shines through in this print. Seurat developed a painting technique known as pointillism which involved making paintings out of small, distinct dots of colour. The effect of this technique is creating vibrant and dynamic surfaces, something which interested Riley greatly, as the artist was fascinated by the way in which movement could be conveyed in her artworks.
Made To Measure captures Riley’s artistic philosophy that complexity lurks beneath the surface of simplicity. In addition to the use of spots, Riley often creates patterns out of geometric shapes and the artist is well known for her Stripe prints in which she carefully arranges stripes in horizontal, vertical or diagonal formations.
