Avon And Somerset Constabulary was produced by Banksy in 2002. Coming in an edition size of 2, the artwork pays homage to Banksy’s hometown of Bristol and the local law enforcers, the Avon and Somerset Police. The artwork was first created in 2000 as a spray paint stencil on canvas and comes in two iterations with pink or blue backgrounds. Other versions of Avon And Somerset Constabulary were also created around the same time – such as a variation with a red and white striped background.
In Avon And Somerset Constabulary Banksy renders two uniformed police officers looking through binoculars. One officer is looking up at the skyline while the other officer, depicted with a baton hanging from his belt, is captured looking directly out of the canvas.
Avon And Somerset Constabulary is Banksy’s satirical take on the suspicious and overenthusiastic police force, looking everywhere – even the sky – for troublemakers to crack down on. The work references the police officers that Banksy dodged in the 1990s during the early days of his graffiti career when he was a part of Bristol’s DryBreadZ Crew (DBZ)
