Meaning & Analysis
Golda Meir is a signed screen print in colours produced by Andy Warhol in 1973. The print comes in an edition size of 550 and was a precursor to Golda Meir (F. & S. II.233), a print Warhol produced in 1980. In this print, Warhol depicts the famous Israeli politician, Golda Meir. Meir served as the fourth prime minister of Israel from 1969 to 1974 and is notable for being the world's fourth and Israel's only woman to hold the office of prime minister.
The print can be seen alongside Warhol’s Ten Portraits of Jews collection. In this series of ten prints, Warhol depicts ten famous Jewish figures in his characteristic Pop Art style. In Golda Meir, Warhol depicts Meir from a side-on angle. Dark blue dominates the composition and this iteration of Meir’s portrait is simpler than the later version which involves a greater experimentation with lines and colour. Meir is set against a plain backdrop which contrasts with some of the other prints in the collection which are characterised by backgrounds composed of geometric shapes or layered colours.
Warhol was obsessed with fame and celebrity culture. The artist often depicted famous figures in his prints with notable examples being Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley. In this collection, however, Warhol moves away from the glamour and glitz of his conventional subjects, choosing instead to draw important figures who have made significant contributions to society.
