Meaning & Analysis
Queen Beatrix Of The Netherlands (F. & S.II.338) features the Dutch monarch in blue and orange for this larger-than-life signed screen print. Andy Warhol’s rendering of the queen has adapted an official portrait to the Pop artist's signature style. Here, the monarch wears her tiara alongside gemstone earrings and a brooch, highlighting her royal status. However, Warhol has flattened her features with blues while adding red outline and colour blocking. Produced in 1985, this large scale print depicts the Dutch monarch in the early years of her reign. Beatrix succeeded to the throne in 1980 and abdicated in 2013. This edition of 40 comes from the larger series, Reigning Queens.
Reigning Queens features four sovereign monarchs who ruled their respective nations in 1985, the year of production. The series includes Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom,Queen Ntombi Twala of Swaziland, and Queen Margrethe of Denmark in addition to Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. Due to its monumental scale, the series remains popular and is included in collections such as the British royal family’s Royal Collection and the Tate Gallery.
