The Shadow (F. & S. II.B 267) is a signed screen print made by the leading figure of the Pop Art movement, Andy Warhol. Produced in 1981, the print comes in an edition size of 200 and shows the artist himself rendered as the caped vigilante, The Shadow, the lead character from the1930s radio show of the same name. The print comes in a number of iterations and in The Shadow (F. & S. II.B 267) Warhol renders his portrait in a looser style, delineating the outline of his face with crayon-like blue gestural lines set against a warm red and orange backdrop. Behind Warhol’s portrait is the shadow of another figure’s profile which is staring to the left of the composition.
The print is part of Warhol’s Myths collection which features ten screen prints, all of which depict icons and idols from American popular culture. The characters chosen by Warhol all play an important role in the shared American cultural consciousness and capture the artist’s ability to distill popular culture into a few powerful images.
The Myths collection exemplifies Warhol’s desire to blur the boundaries between ‘high’ and 'low' culture. By making icons of popular culture into limited edition artworks, Warhol elevates these images from everyday mass media imagery into the realm of fine art.
