Meaning & Analysis
Mickey Mouse (F. & S. II.265) is a signed screen print on Lenox Museum board with diamond dust made by the acclaimed artist Andy Warhol in 1981. The print comes in an edition size of 200 and shows the beloved cartoon character, Mickey Mouse. Mickey Mouse is rendered from side on, looking ecstatically at something outside of the composition. Black, white and grey dominate the composition which has splashes of colour from the cartoon’s wide red grin and the pink and gold gestural lines that outline the mouse’s smiling face.
Mickey Mouse (F. & S. II.265) is one of ten prints in Warhol’s Myths collection. Each print is dedicated to an icon or idol from American popular culture. Many of the subjects for these prints are from 1950s television shows or Hollywood films, and Mickey Mouse is one of the oldest icons depicted in the collection, dating back to 1928 when the character was created by Walt Disney.
The myths collection captures Warhol’s ability to spot the most prominent icons and symbols of contemporary culture. Warhol is known for his Pop Art portraits of iconic film stars and singers such as Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley and later in 1985, the artist created another series of artworks inspired by symbols of popular culture, the Ads collection.
