Santa Claus is a signed screen print on Lenox Museum board made by the critically acclaimed artist Andy Warhol in 1981. Coming in an edition size of 250 the print shows a portrait of the beloved mythical figure, Santa Claus. Santa Claus comes in various iterations with this version using a less traditional colour scheme than Santa Claus (F. & S. II.266). Santa Claus captures the essence of Warhol’s artistic style, characterised by his use of bright colours and bold gestural lines. Santa’s hair is rendered in a bright orange with hints of red, set against a bold green backdrop. Warhol uses green crayon-like lines to add detail to the print and delineate the character’s kind facial features and impressive beard.
Santa Claus is part of Warhol’s Myths collection which features ten screen prints, all of which depict an icon or idol from American popular culture. Santa Claus is a global icon that has become universally recognised as the figure representing Christmas.
The Myths collection captures Warhol’s fascination with popular culture. By taking figures from mass media imagery and making them into the subjects of his artworks, Warhol elevates these images into the realm of fine art, reflecting his desire to break down the boundaries between ‘high’ and ‘low’ culture.
