Meaning & Analysis
In Moonwalk Suite, Andy Warhol has adapted Neil Armstrong’s famous 1969 photograph of Buzz Aldrin’s steps on the moon. The astronaut is clad in his signature space suit, and stands to the left of a reversed American flag. Warhol’s screen print has intensified the texture of the lunar surface with exaggerated blues and his own addition of line drawing and outline. In each of the two prints in the suite Warhol has recoloured Aldrin’s suit and the American flag, one in pink and one in yellow. The hot pink and lemon yellow add a sense of playfulness and also otherworldliness to these images.
Completed in the last months of his life before his untimely death, Moonwalk Suite comprises the images from the series Moonwalk. The suite was intended as part of a larger series, TV, which would have included images of Martin Luther King Jr. and the Beatles from the 20th century. Moonwalk itself focuses on a moment nearly two decades prior to Warhol’s rendition.
This reflective images highlights the importance of this image in the continuing consciousness of the American people. Indeed, it is as recognisable now as it was in 1987 or even 1967. Unfortunately, Warhol passed away from surgery complications having only completed the Moonwalk images, making this suite particularly valuable within his greater oeuvre.
