Wayne Gretzky #99 (F. & S. II.306) is a signed screen print on Lenox Museum Board made by the renowned Pop Artist Andy Warhol. The print, which was produced in 1984, comes in an edition size of 300 and shows the famous Canadian ice hockey player, Wayne Douglas Gretzky. Gretzky was nicknamed ‘the Great One’ due to his exceptional talent as a sportsman and he played 20 seasons in the National Hockey League from 1979 to 1999.
In this print, Warhol produces a portrait of the hockey player in his signature Pop Art style, characterised by the use of bold and vibrant colours and gestural lines. The print has a collage feel to it as Warhol layers images of the hockey player over each other. Outlines of the hockey player are drawn in yellow lines over a royal blue backdrop. On top of these sketches, Warhol draws a portrait of Gretzky which is set against a white rectangle. The layering of colours brings a dynamic quality to the print which resonates with Gretzky’s sporting prowess.
Warhol was fascinated by fame and the lives of celebrities. The artist frequently produced portraits of his favourite stars such as Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley. Wayne Gretzky #99 (F. & S.
