Meaning & Analysis
Anniversary Donald Duck (F. & S. II.360) is a signed screen print made by the iconic Pop Artist Andy Warhol in 1985. Coming in a limited edition size of 30, the print depicts the beloved cartoon character, Donald Duck, captured in motion carrying a broom. The print captures the essence of Warhol’s visual language, characterised by his use of bright and saturated colours and bold gestural lines. As Donald Duck marches across the composition, four mirror images of the cartoon are captured behind him, adding to the sense of motion contained within the image.
Anniversary Donald Duck (F. & S. II.360) was produced late in Warhol’s artistic career and the print was made two years before the artist’s death in 1987. The print is part of Warhol’s Ads collection which the artist created in order to comment on the impact of mass media in capitalist America.
The image of Donald Duck which Warhol uses for this print originated from a short film made by Walt Disney Productions, The New Spirit, which was a propaganda film that encouraged American citizens to pay their income tax. Anniversary Donald Duck (F. & S. II.360) is a political print in which Warhol comments on the spread of Capitalism in post-war America and the way political ideology was propagated through the media.
