Mickey Mouse is a signed silkscreen print with glitter produced by renowned contemporary artist, Damien Hirst. The print, made in 2016, depicts the iconic cartoon character, Mickey Mouse. Hirst brings his own personal touch to the image of this cultural icon by rendering Mickey Mouse in the style of a Spots painting. Hirst uses large circles and spots to compose the composition’s central figure and maintains the conventional colours associated with the cartoon character, black, white, red and yellow.
The print is part of the Mickey Mouse series, a collection of prints, all inspired by the famous American cartoon series created by Walt Disney in 1928. Hirst was commissioned by Disney to remake Mickey Mouse in his signature artistic style. Other artists, such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Claes Oldenburg have also produced artworks inspired by the popular cartoon character.
Discussing the print, Hirst explains why he chose to compose Mickey Mouse using a variety of different sized spots. The artist elaborates: “Mickey Mouse represents happiness and the joy of being a kid and I have reduced his shape down to the basic elements of a few simple spots. I hope people love it, because it is still instantly recognisable - Mickey is such a universal and powerful icon.”
