Biography

JonOne's artistic journey began on the streets of Harlem, where he first encountered graffiti at the age of 17. Adopting the tag Jon156, he quickly became immersed in New York's vibrant Street Art scene of the 1980s. In 1984, he founded the graffiti group 156 All Starz, a pivotal moment that set the groundwork for his position in Contemporary Art.

Seeking new opportunities, JonOne relocated to Paris in 1987. This move marked a significant turning point in his career, allowing him to explore new artistic movements while retaining the spirit of his Street Art. In Paris, he found a receptive audience for his artistic voice, which blended the liberated energy of graffiti with the process-driven Abstract Expressionist approach.

Evolving beyond traditional graffiti, JonOne’s work began incorporating elements of Action Painting. His canvases became explosions of colour and movement, reflecting his Street Art background and his exposure to the Parisian art scene.

As JonOne's career gained momentum, so did the scale and ambition of his projects. His work has ranged from canvases and also large-scale public installations and collaborations with major brands. In 2017, he painted a Boeing 777 for Air France, creating a flying artwork that blended his Street Art aesthetics and commercial awareness.

JonOne's artistic evolution has been marked by a constant effort to redefine the boundaries of Urban Art. His work has been exhibited in prestigious galleries and museums worldwide, including solo shows at the Fondation Clément in Martinique and Galerie Brugier-Rigail in Paris. In 2015, one of his paintings was presented to François Hollande, then President of France, by the Mexican government, a testament to the international recognition of his work.

The 2013 lithograph The Fall reflects JonOne’s roots in graffiti, incorporating bold, vibrant colours, drips, and spontaneous gestures. The print is an explosion of hues—yellows, greens, purples, and reds—layered over splashes of white, creating a dynamic, textured composition. In his printmaking, JonOne translates the energetic immediacy of graffiti into the controlled process of lithography.
