Meaning & Analysis
The Round Plate is a 1986 print by David Hockney, created using an office colour copy machine on Arches Text wove paper. This vibrant still life depicts a plate with fruit, including a red apple, a green pear, a handful of berries, and a lemon without colour set atop a blue plate.
Created in April 1986, this home-made print utilises an office colour copy machine, a method Hockney began experimenting with in the mid-1980s. The composition features a blue plate with vividly coloured fruit, rendered with a playful use of texture and colour. The red and green hues of the fruit contrast sharply with the blue plate and the patterned background, creating a dynamic visual effect. This work is part of a series where Hockney explored the potential of unconventional printmaking techniques, reflecting his continuous innovation and willingness to experiment. The use of everyday objects as subjects ties this piece to Hockney's broader oeuvre, which often focuses on the beauty of the mundane.
