Peter At Odins is a signed lithograph by British artist David Hockney, and is a part of the artist’s Portraits collection. Issued in 1972 in an edition of 80, this lithograph depicts the Restaurateur and entrepreneur Peter Langan.
Hockney’s sitter in Peter At Odins is Restauranter and entrepreneur Peter Langan. Peter opened a restaurant eponymously named Langan’s Brasserie on Stratton Street in Mayfair in 1976 in collaboration with British actor Michael Caine. By the mid-1980s, Langan’s Brasserie would become a fashionable haunt for a range of stars from Elizabeth Taylor and Mick Jagger to Francis Bacon and David Hockney himself. In this etching, Peter is supposedly in Odin’s Bar and Bistro, another restaurant opened by Peter that was located in Marylebone and closed in 2013. However, as the etching only depicts Peter’s face, and an umbrella being held above his head, it is not the content but the title that informs the viewer of the scene depicted. Once more, Hockney is documenting those he was well acquaintanced with: preserving a snapshot in time of a period in his life, like a diary.
