Biography

Shields was born on 4 February 1944 in the United States and gained prominence in the New York art scene during the 1970s. He is known for his vibrant, sewn, and painted canvases that blur the lines between painting, sculpture, and textile art. As a Post-Minimalist artist, Shields explored colour, form, and texture, often incorporating diverse materials such as beads and rope into his creations. His artistic philosophy revolved around transforming everyday materials into expressive forms.

His career featured significant exhibitions and collaborations, showcasing his innovative approach to art. Shields' work received acclaim for its bold use of colour and texture, exemplified in his 1985 Dance Bag multi-media work. This highlighted his ability to merge painting with textile art, positioning him within the Post-Minimalist movement.

Throughout his career, Shields exhibited widely, with his works featured in galleries and museums, including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art. He was known for his collaborative spirit, engaging with other artists and communities to create installations.
