Meaning & Analysis

The partly hidden images in this sequence are altered and obscured by the fractions of stylised glass, pushing them to the point of abstraction. The subjects are glimpsed between sharp mirrored shapes that break and refract the surface of the image. The Reflections prints resemble disjointed collages and reinvent their source materials into graphic compositions of reflective light.

The figures themselves are also recognisable from some of Lichtenstein’s most iconic works, and each of the Reflections prints references one of the artist’s signature motifs. Reflections On Girl features the cartoon heroines characterising the artist’s earliest works from the 1960s. The blonde female appears cropped and fragmented, and while her profile remains complete the majority of the image is obscured. The comic-strip style speech bubble displaying her thoughts has also been broken up. With half of the text is missing, the gaps are left for the viewer to fill in by themselves.

  • Roy Lichtenstein, born in New York, 1923, is a seminal figure in the Pop Art movement, renowned for his comic book and advertisement-inspired artworks. His transformative journey from classical painter to Pop Art pioneer began with his iconic piece, Look Mickey, marking the fusion of painting with pop culture. Lichtenstein’s works, including Whaam!, Drowning Girl, and Crying Girl, blend parody and satire, challenging the boundaries between popular culture and ‘high art’. With over 5,000 pieces to his name, Lichtenstein’s enduring influence resonates in contemporary art, his works celebrated in prestigious institutions worldwide.
