Meaning & Analysis
Alert: System Infected (black and red) is a signed screen print made by the renowned French street artist Invader in 2001. Coming in an edition size of 100 the print shows a composition made out of small, square tiles, reminiscent of a mosaic. Against a backdrop made of black tiles is a shape that looks like a speech bubble from a cartoon or comic. Inside the bubble is an alien composed of red tiles. Energy lines emit from the alien suggesting it is talking or trying to communicate with other aliens.
The alien character depicted in Alert: System Infected (black and red) is inspired by the popular arcade game, Space Invaders, created by Japanese game manufacturer Taito in 1978. Many of Invader’s artworks, and the artist’s pseudonym itself, were inspired by this game and the artist’s use of mosaic tiles, which resonates with the 8-bit visual register of arcade games, further capture how much Invader was inspired by the arcade games he played as a child.
Invader identifies as an ‘Unidentified Free Artist,’ a UFA for short. Playing on the acronym UFO (Unidentified Flying Object), extra-terrestrial life and space have had a strong impact on the work of Invader.
