March 2024 | Sotheby's London - United Kingdom | Exhibition At Richard Feigen Gallery, New York - Signed Print |
This lithograph is of the poster advertised surrounding Bridget Riley’s 1965 exhibition at Richard Feigen Gallery, New York. The simple composition: black and white lines curving at decreasing intervals as they move vertically down the page, has complex effects on the viewer. Optically distorting and executed in black and white, it echoes the dizzying artworks which propelled Riley to international fame in the early 1960s following her inclusion in The Responsive Eye, held at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1965. From the same year, this poster emerged in arguably the most critical year of Riley’s artistic career.
Many of the posters originally printed included text and were folded and mailed out as invitations to the exhibition. A number of these were printed without text and signed by the artist, like this lithograph here. Riley’s dazzling black and white works from this period are now some of the most recognisable images by any living artist.
