Banksy's 2004 Pulp Fiction signed screen print edition of 150 is a playful, monochromatic reimagination of Quentin Tarantino’s neo-noir classic. Substituting John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson’s guns for yellow bananas as weapons, Banksy offers a quirky take on the cultish nature of film and art.
Pulp Fiction is a bold, striking black and white piece clearly informed by the neo-noir aesthetic of Quentin Tarantino’s 1994 cult film of the same title. The artwork shows Pulp Fiction actors John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson pointing bright yellow bananas at an out of shot antagonist which in the film were of course real guns. Through this interpretation, Banksy makes an anti-gun and anti-violence statement using popular culture and American cult cinema as his effective context. The movie Pulp Fiction, as well as Tarantino’s trademark style as a whole is known for excessive violence, and so with this print Banksy might just be commenting on the ridiculousness of that in itself. Other famous artworks such as Love Is In The Air depicting a masked protester throwing a bouquet of flowers, express a similarly powerful call for peaceful resolutions of conflict.
